I don't see myself as a health guru (far from that). Sometimes, I am guilty of eating foods that are not as good, but I do try to stick to the healthier choices most of the time.
Reading the first poem made me really hungry (let alone writing it).
For most of us, I think food not only needs to have nutritional value, but it also must taste good.
The taste is probably more important in the short-term for us than its nutritional value.
So the challenge we all face is trying to eat foods that are both; high in good for us nutrients and taste amazing at the same time.
Delicious
We all enjoy delicious food,
Makes us happy, fixes our mood.
It's all about the juicy taste,
Doesn't matter, where the food is placed.
We should consider, nutritional support,
We shall need it, if we engage in a sport.
Energy; food provides - plenty
Need a bit more, if we're over twenty.
A great dish, we should all savor,
Eat slowly, as we taste the flavor.
Choose our very favorite cuisine,
Is it red? Or is it green?
By Martin Dejnicki
The second poem talks about sweet desserts and pastries.
Personally, I'm a very huge fan of many different types of sweet treats. However, my favorite is definitely apple pie.
But not just any mass produced apple pie that you could find at your local grocery store.
I'm talking about my 85 year old grandma Alice's legendary apple pie. I can't even describe how amazing her homemade apple pies taste.
They just seem to melt in your mouth, and good luck just eating one piece.
This next poem is dedicated to my wonderful and loving grandmother (Alice). I can't wait to see her again, and thank her for everything she has done for me and our family for so many years.
Seven
I'll take sweet, any day over sour,
Mouth-watering pastries depend on the flour.
Dessert usually comes, at the end of the meal,
Sugary sensations, the taste is surreal.
Belgian chocolate truffle cake,
Cures every single, emotional ache.
Some may say, it's a bit too rich,
I'm in love, I'll never switch.
How about grandma's apple pie,
I don't care, if goes to my thigh.
When I see it, I think of heaven,
Feel so lucky, call me Seven.
By Martin Dejnicki
Recently, I also became a big fan of Belgian chocolate truffle cake (even though it has a very rich flavor).
This cake is made by La Rocca, and tastes amazing. I must thank (or blame) my wife for introducing me to this addictive indulgence.
Cookies are another story all by themselves. Especially those oatmeal raisin chewy ones.
Recently, I was looking to buy one of these very cool Cuisinart ice cream makers (since I love ice cream). But I managed to resist. We'll see how long that lasts, lol.
The next two poems about food were written with children in mind, so don't forget to share them with all the kids in your life.
The first food poem for kids is mean to remind our precious children about the importance of making healthy eating decisions. Often times, kids are not in control of everything they eat, since their parents or caregivers make those decisions. But hopefully, food poems like the one below, will inspire children to remind and educate their parents about healthy eating.
Food For Kids
Food is good and tastes delicious,
Keeps you healthy, it's nutritious.
Food will also help you grow,
Make you strong, when you throw.
Eating foods that are purple and green,
Will make you into a healthy teen.
Many great foods, are really yummy,
If you eat too much, you'll hurt your tummy.
About healthy foods, you should read,
Learn what kids really need.
Food information you could share,
With your family, and show you care.
By Martin Dejnicki
Children talk a lot amongst each other. I remember when I was a kid, I would run home and inform my parents about what this friend or what that friend told me. So kids are clearly, easily influenced by other children. I see that as an opportunity for children to spread the word about healthy food choices to their classmates and friends.
Honestly, prior to writing the following reindeer food poem, I didn't know the story behind reindeer food. But after a little bit of research, I understand its importance. Magical reindeer food is meant to guide Santa's reindeer to your rooftop, and also provide the reindeer with energy while Santa is inside eating cookies and milk.
Reindeer Food
Your reindeer food will help Santa guide,
To your rooftop, as they all glide.
The magic food, you need to sprinkle,
When Rudolph sees it, his nose will twinkle.
Reindeer will notice, if you add some glitter,
Make them sweet, they don't want bitter.
Those tasty oats, amazing will smell,
Fill all their tummies, like a magic spell.
Make sure it's ready, they travel so far,
During the night, they're close to a star.
Santa will eat, all those cookies inside,
Reindeer need energy, for the next ride.
By Martin Dejnicki
Next Christmas, I need to remember to sprinkle my lawn with glitter covered reindeer food. I might even make separate little piles for each reindeer.
I enjoyed writing the following short poem about healthy food and nutrition. I learned from my research that there are many great foods for the brain. Some of them help in memory retention, while others help strengthen the countless neural connections in our brains and help in development.
Brain and Body
Healthy brain foods, what's the cost?
Those that avoid, their memory is lost.
We need more than nutrients essential,
Our human brains, have so much potential.
Assorted berries, a memory boost,
Apples protect us, cancers reduced.
Cherries will fight inflammation,
Dark chocolate boosts, our circulation.
Oysters provide us with plenty of zinc,
Aging and healing, there is a link.
Eggs and fish, will build our brains,
All these foods, have countless gains.
By Martin Dejnicki
The trick is to stay disciplined enough to incorporate most of these foods into our regular diet. I think it's important to eat different types of healthy foods throughout the month. Diversity is key, at least that's what I think.
There are also many tasty food combinations and recipes out there. Sometimes, all you need to do is just combine a few "not so tasty" nutritional foods together, and viola, the end result is delicious.
This funny food poem talks about a food fight that suddenly arose from a quiet dinner. I've never had the pleasure of being involved in a food fight. But maybe I should start one, at the next family gathering. Now that would be very interesting.
Food Fight
Dinner began, silent and calm,
Delicious food, thanks to our mom.
Suddenly we noticed, something fly,
It wasn't a plane, it was a pie.
A sight to see, crème pie in the face,
Chaos erupted, it was a race.
Salads, chicken, and lots of rice,
Hilarious food fight, with plenty of spice.
Grandpa received food in his ear,
Didn't matter, he still couldn't hear.
Mom had pies, under the table,
Dad surrendered, went to watch cable.
Laughter filled, the dining room,
They would need more, than just a broom.
It was much more, than a really bad mess.
A fun way to relieve, some of that stress.
By Martin Dejnicki
Doing something foolish and spontaneous like having a food fight, could be a wonderful way to not only relieve some tension in the room, but also a great way to reduce some of that everyday stress that we are all caring around these days.
The first half of the following fast food poem looks at the benefits of fast food. While the second half, is meant to remind us that fast food is not good for us.
Fast Food
Fast food is easy, and super quick,
So many choices, what should I pick?
A burger that is enormously large,
Add some more fries, minimal charge.
How about that sugary juice,
I don't have time; typical excuse.
Is it time to finally wakeup?
Love for fast food, we should breakup.
This is certainly, our taboo obsession,
Especially now, during recession.
We should focus, on our health - instead
Eating choices, with our head.
By Martin Dejnicki
The temptation behind fast food or Junk food is very clear to me. The food is readily available, with preparation times lasting a minute or so, and it actually tastes pretty good. Well, that's probably because of the sauces they add to those burgers or to the pizza. There's always lots of cheese, and everything is greasy. Now of course if you add all of those things together, the food will taste good. Unfortunately, it's not good for our health.
As I was writing the following rhyming poem about fruits and vegetables, my wife was making juice out of carrots, apples, celery, broccoli, and cabbage. I read that fresh cabbage juice works wonders on dealing with peptic ulcers. That's something I've been personally dealing with since I was six.
I enjoy adding some fruits (blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries) to my breakfast. They taste great when mixed with almonds and natural yogurt.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables promote good health,
It's the most important wealth.
Vitamins, minerals, and fibre we need,
Results are in, we've all agreed.
Fruits and vegetables prevent diseases,
Let's minimize those salty cheeses.
Range of colors should be wide,
Fresh are better, than frozen or dried.
Fruits and vegetables, manage our weight,
Healthy calories, on a white plate.
They are natural, they'll keep us going,
A healthy life, starts with knowing.
By Martin Dejnicki
I think we all need to incorporate a little bit more fruits and vegetables into our diets. Especially children and teenagers, since they're still developing.
In my opinion, the best way to extract healthy juices from fruits and vegetables is to use one of these amazing Omega juicers. My wife and I have used ours for years and it has transformed our health and lives.
Here's a little poem about lunch that rhymes quite nicely. No matter how old we are, we all look forward to lunch. Maybe because it falls at the time of the day when we all need a little bit of an energy boost. The social aspect of lunch is also attractive. It's an opportunity to just relax and talk to family, friends or colleagues, about whatever we wish.
Lunch
A social meal we all call lunch,
Combined with breakfast, it's called brunch.
Sometimes lunch involves some work,
Like a meeting with a perk.
For most it's just a sandwich with cheese,
If lunch is outside, enjoy the breeze.
You could simply go for a walk,
Eat on the go, during a talk.
The bottom line, lunch is a break,
You may have yogurt, or even a steak.
In the end, lunch should be fun,
Choose a fresh, soft whole wheat bun.
By Martin Dejnicki
Skipping or working through lunch is not recommended. Our bodies and our minds really need that break. If we skip lunch over a long period of time, it could end up hurting us.
The first line in the following breakfast poem reminds us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Many of us don't eat breakfast, because we don't feel like it or because we simply don't have the time. If you're one of these people, I hope you stop punishing your body and begin eating the most important meal of your day - breakfast!
Breakfast
Most important, meal of the day,
Provides energy, for work and for play.
Definitely helps us, get a good start,
Stick to foods, that are good for the heart.
Oatmeal, blueberries, with almonds are tasty,
This can be done, quickly and hasty.
Low-fat yogurt, and maybe granola,
Stay away from coffee or cola.
Protein shakes, do you like soy?
Attack each morning, with plenty of joy.
Sure it's much easier, said than done,
A healthy breakfast, your body has won.
By Martin Dejnicki
It's really important to have breakfast when we get up each morning because our body and our mind lacks the nutrients and energy it needs to function properly for the rest of the day.
I'm a big fan of eating lots of fruits and nuts/berries for breakfast.
I also make sure to consume high fibre grains (which aid in digestion).
I'm not a nutritionist, but my wife does a very good job guiding me (she reads up on this stuff all the time).
Well, I had a lot of fun writing these poems about food. I learned a lot in the process, and hopefully you learned something as well.
